Takeoff fans mourn the late rapper’s death in service at State Farm Arena in Atlanta

Fans gathered to remember rapper Takeoff, a member of hip-hop trio Migos, who died in the rain on Friday Downtown Atlanta Near where the 28-year-old grew up.

State Farm Arena, home of the Atlanta Hawks, was hosting a memorial service to celebrate the rapper’s life and music, and a giant sign outside the arena was lit with the rapper’s image.

Takeoff, Born Kirsnik Khari Ball, shot dead Outside Houston’s bowling alley earlier this month. A woman and another man were also injured in the shooting. No arrests have been made.

Jennifer Loving, 22, stood with her newborn son, Mateo, for more than an hour before the doors opened to fans. He said the takeoff death was heartbreaking because he was too young.

Migos’ music represents the creativity and culture of the black community, she said, and she worries the group will be too sad to make new music — at least for a while.

“It’s something you can play anywhere, and everyone will just come out and dance and dance,” she said. “That’s how it brings people together. That’s how it fills the whole room with positivity.”

Eric Hood, an atlanta firefighterSaid that he was shocked when he heard of the takeoff death because of the three members of the Migos he was considered the most laid-back.

Migos’ music was an “escape” for many, he said, and he hoped the show would leave his family and the rest of the group with lasting memories of them.

“I pray for them,” he said. “I hope they continue to be uplifting, positive, influential members of society and continue to grow.”

Free tickets to the memorial service were available to Georgia residents, but the State Farm Arena said before Friday that the event had reached capacity and that fans without tickets should not come into town.

The venue did not release any schedule for the event.

The Grammy Award-nominated trio Migos also included Takeoff’s uncle Quavo and cousin Offset. The three were largely raised in an Atlanta suburb by Takeoff’s mother.

Migos broke up nearly a decade ago with the 2013 hit “Versace,” which rose to even greater heights in popularity through the Drake remix.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finer said a day after the shooting that the takeoff was “highly respected” and that “there was no reason to believe he was involved in any perpetrators at the time.”

Migos’ record label, Quality Control, mourned Takeoff’s death in a statement posted on instagram who attributed it to “stupid violence and a stray bullet”. The police did not say anything about the incident of firing.

Instead of flowers or gifts, his family has asked people to donate to The Rocket Foundation, which was founded in honor of Takeoff and aims to stop gun violence, according to its website.
