Natasha Rothwell is starring in an Emmy-nominated supporting role in one of the most popular shows of the last year by leading her own series. deadline report that the “White Lotus” actress has secured a series order from Onyx Collective for “How to Die Alone,” a comedy she will star in, write, co-produce and produce. The eight-part, half-hour series will stream on Hulu.
“How to Die Alone” stars Rothwell as Melissa, “a fat, black neurotic who’s never been in love,” the source details. After a near-death experience, Melissa is determined to live her best life and be “100% that bitch” no matter what the cost.
Rothwell, who is under an overall deal with ABC Signature, is sharing showrunner duties with Vera Santamaria (“PEN15”).
Reflecting on the importance of diverse storytellers in the industry, Rothwell said“To be able to be in a writer’s room that reflects the world we live in, as far as populating it, and to be on a set that speaks to the diversity of our talents as people […] Definitely set the tone for how I want to run Big Hatty Productions and how I approach the projects that I take on. She added, “I want to be able to diversify the ways that we are perceived, and the only way we want to do that is with greater representation and visibility. I aim to write, direct and be involved in projects that do this.” Have to keep on acting.
Rothwell’s Emmy nomination this year marks her second. He was previously nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series for the Issa Rae-starrer “Insecure”, which he co-produced, wrote and starred in. His upcoming slate includes “Wonka,” a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” prequel about Willy Wonka.
