While many actresses are trying to break stereotypes including obsession with skin colour, mainstream Indian cinema focuses heavily on fair skin. After Shilpa Shetty, Bipasha Basu and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Kalki Koechlin has also broken her silence on this. Known for her roles in films like Dev D, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Gully Boy And much more, Kalki reveals how colorism is still prevalent in the film industry.
Kalki Koechlin talks about discrimination on color in the industry; Says ‘I feel very disappointed’
A report in Hindustan Times quoted Kalki Koechlin as talking about her first experience of being typecast in the image of a rich girl, despite her diverse roles. Koechlin says, “I’ve had a director say to me, ‘I think you’ll play this role perfectly because you play a psychological role in it’. People have similar perceptions of me, and I’m quite I feel disappointed. Obviously, because of the color of my skin, I can only play these upper-class characters.”
Adding to the same, Koechlin said, “I know a dark complexioned actor who is always given the role of a maid. This leaves her disappointed. All have been put in boxes. I am waiting for the right role to come so that I can challenge myself.” He also shed some light on his upcoming film, titled goldfishIn which she plays the daughter of veteran actor Deepti Naval, who is suffering from dementia.
Admitting that such roles give him the freedom to experiment, he said, “You have to choose your fight. I don’t do it every time. If it was an unknown director, I probably wouldn’t be. I had seen his first film, so I was in good hands. As an actor, you are greedy for these kinds of roles where you get to differentiate the characters, go deep into the role. When you have one, you jump on it”.
