‘Harry Potter’ fans are asked to stop leaving socks at Dobby’s memorial in Wales

Dobby the House Elf quickly became a fan favorite among “Harry Potter” fans. when the beloved character died “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,” The location where his death scene was filmed became a destination for fans around the world.

A popular item that fans leave at the character’s grave are socks. The socks were an important part of Dobby’s story in the “Harry Potter” books of JK Rowling and the movies. When a house elf is given a sock by their owner, it means they are free.

In the second film of the franchise “Chamber of Secrets” Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) Dobby’s evil master, Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs) tricks him into freeing the elf by hiding the sock inside a diary.

In the first half of the franchise’s final film, Dobby rescues Harry Potter and his friends, but while doing so, he is killed by Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter).

A fan memorial to Dobby where the death scene was shot is located at Freshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Many fans have visited the site from the popular film franchise and left objects such as the rocks depicted around the tomb. Fans have also left stockings on the spot, which has become a wildlife issue.

Welsh officials have said they will leave the monument where it stands, as long as fans stop leaving gifts at the location.

“Dobby’s memorial will remain at Freshwater West for the public to enjoy in the immediate period,” the National Trust for Wales said in a statement. “The trust is asking visitors to take photographs only when visiting the monument to help protect the wider landscape.”

“Items such as socks, trinkets and paint chips from colored pebbles can enter the marine environment and food chain and endanger wildlife,” he continued.
